Full description | Annual nurserymen's outing, Worthing. Photograph taken in Ham Lane on the annual outing of local nurserymen, probably going to Wisborough Green. Group of men, wearing their "Sunday best" and all wearing hats, sit in an open-topped carriage with rows of bench seats and four horses harnessed. Boy standing at far left is named Page and later became superintendent of Special Police Force. Man standing wearing straw boater hat is Abram Duffield (also known as Abraham). Iin front of him are three of his sons (l-r) Thomas, Archibald and Abram. The Duffields, members of a local band, are carrying musical instruments. Abram Duffield, who worked as a market gardener, was born in 1859 and died in May 1893, one of the earliest victims of the typhoid epidemic in Worthing. Digital restoration work by Mike Tunstall. |
