Short title | Annual nurserymen's outing, Worthing |
Full description | Annual nurserymen's outing, Worthing. Photograph taken in Ham Lane on the annual outing of local nurserymen, probably going to Wisborough Green. Group of men, wearing their "Sunday best" and all wearing hats, pose standing around a lamp post, in front of an open-topped carriage with rows of bench seats and four horses harnessed. Man standing fourth from right in main group, wearing a straw boater hat and holding a cornet, is Abram Duffield (also known as Abraham). Standing near him and also holding musical instruments are four of his sons (l-r) Albert, Archibald, Thomas and Abram. Abram Duffield, who worked as a market gardener, was born in 1859 and died in May 1893, one of the earliest victims of the typhoid epidemic in Worthing. Digital restoration work by Mike Tunstall. |
